What is spay and neuter surgery?

These procedures are performed on pets to prevent them from having kittens and puppies. Neutering is performed on male pets, while spaying is for females. During spay surgery, an incision is made on the abdomen, and the ovaries and uterus are removed. When a pet is neutered, the testicles are removed.

When should my pet have the surgery done?

In general, we recommend pets have the procedure when they are around 6-months-old. If your pet is older, it is still possible for them to have the procedure; our team will check to ensure they are healthy enough to withstand the surgery.

What are the benefits of having the procedure done?

Most pet owners know the procedure prevents unwanted litters, but there are also health and behavioural benefits. Here are just some of them:

• The procedure prevents your pet from roaming, spraying furniture, humping objects, or becoming aggressive. When in heat, these are common behaviours in pets as they become territorial.
• The surgery reduces the risk of your pet developing infections, cancer, or sexually transmitted diseases. Cats and dogs who don’t have the procedure may develop uterine infections or mammary, prostate, or testicular cancer.

The surgery can extend your pet’s life. By preventing diseases and reducing your pet’s exposure to harm, they will live longer.
